Inadequate requirements
Terrible things are happening at the University of Canada, Faculty of Medicine, Department of Histology. This has been going on for several years, students are constantly writing complaints, but due to internal worm relations, no one changes anything. First-year students are actually tortured, with demands that the student not be admitted to the examination and take a repeated course in histology for a fee. Histology begins in the 1st year of the 2nd semester and lasts for 4 months. The program is designed in such a way that the student has to learn the topic independently during the week, prepare a synopsis and drawings. The volume each week is about 30-40 p. To the extent, but only from j. Markov books. The histology books of other authors do not even contain half of the material that is required of us, because Markov has a lot of physiology and biochemistry. The book is terribly complicated, I will add excerpts to understand what it is about. At the beginning of the lesson, the student immediately writes a test and draws a drawing. The material needs to be known in great detail, if you don't know something or something is not detailed enough the works are not counted. In this way for the whole course (about 100 people) are in debt and debts cannot be offset. The book is so complex that a first-year student cannot understand even half of the material while reading it. Only a few students are able to be admitted during the consultation, so there are more and more debtors in histology. Well, if 90 out of 100 people have unrecorded works, then it does not show that the problem is not with the students, but with the lecturers and the program. 2. In the first year of the semester, students have not yet mastered the anatomy of internal organs, but they are already required to perform all physiological and biochemical processes in the digestive and respiratory systems. However, it is not possible to learn it independently in such a short time. In the first year, you have to memorize practically everything that is j. Markov's book, which certainly does not yet correspond to the level of students' knowledge. The student cannot understand half of what is written there, but the requirements are to know without a little every word by heart! It looks like it's all done specifically to get students to pay for repetitive courses. This year the situation is even worse, because for two groups histology is led by a professor who is absolutely not competent as a histology teacher. The material is not explained at all, everything remains with the student. The groups write complaints asking for a change of lecturer, but there is no reaction from the university. 4 out of 100 students were admitted to the first test this year, and this is not because they have a low level of knowledge, the requirements from the instructors correspond to at least the 3rd year level. The description of the study course mentions that the desired time for independent work in histology is about 5 hours a week. That sounds funny. We sit with this book and try to understandwhich is written there at least 5 hours a day and so is not included. It is quite clear that the requirements are inadequate. Very little time is devoted to preparations that are central to histology. The theory of biochemical and physiological processes must be studied at all times. Colloquia give us some schemes that were never explained. I will also add in the appendix. As you can immediately understand what is depicted there, the requirements are for the student to immediately recognize and write the components in the colloquium. Its schemes look awful, not colorful. If you are not prepared, then you cannot know what is there. But those schemes were not given to us and were not put anywhere so that we could prepare them! Maybe everyone would be happy if such requirements were set in the 3rd Course after learning other subjects. But why you need to know all this in the 1st year. It is not clear where such rules come from, but if you make them, give us lectures at least every day,so that the material is at least explained and the student understands what is required of him in general. Or extend the course, or give the student materials other than one book with continuous abbreviations, biochemical processes, and in-depth cytology. There are other wonderful books in histology that have everything to do with the subject of histology, but we are not allowed to read them because they are outdated and there is everything wrong. For example, if the material of the Dalmatian book is completely mastered, it is not enough for even 4 points to be evaluated. Italian textbooks also do not match. Nothing matches except one book. Because of this, all first-year students have a lot of stress. Everyone learns and tries, but such a program and demands completely kill our nervous system, many can not stand such tension. Some leave, some begin with mental disorders, some also succeed and get offset. Complaints are written every year, but nothing changes. Everyone doesn't care! Debt restructuring is also not that easy. During the consultation, the teachers are not able to accept even half of the debtors, and the student simply does not have the opportunity to correct anything. Consultation times are sometimes set in the late evenings, for example on Fridays at 22:00! It is quite clear that the student in the 1st year is not able to learn so much material on his own, everyone agrees that there is a bardard in the department, but there is no action. Everyone sits in their seats and shifts responsibility to each other. Also included are group test marks.
