Travel credit

I am wanting to book flights for 2 adults from Melbourne to Queenstown return using travel credits, but apparently the paying process will not allow me to use the credits and pay residual. Do I have to book flights to the cost below the travel credit, or please explain how I can get past this. Thank you, Annmaree Cox 041237****
