As a military retired person, I had 10 years to use or lose my GI education benefits. I can’t remember my exact dates with AIU, but it was in the 2000-**** timeframe. After retirement, I was working as an offshore Field Service Engineer. Heard about AIU online and thought this might be a great way to use my benefits, perform my current occupation and get a sheepskin (BIT). AIU was most “helpful” to get me into a student loan - that was in addition to taking my education benefit monies each month (about $1200). Student loans: about $23,000. I quit AIU because they said they were “online” but would ship text books to me. I had a job in Germany/Norway. When my books didn’t arrive in time, I was able to push the job a week (AIU was notified and aware that I had to have the books before I left or I couldn’t complete the course for that term). Needless to say, these (non online) books never arrived till after I’d been overseas 10 days! Ended up with an F. Had to retake the course (got an A). AIU said I had to pay for both courses. Told them to pack sand. Student loan was paid off, loss of GI Benefits funds and a collections attorney contacted me for a balance due. Told him to take me to court and all of a sudden, a settlement for much less could be reached for about 1/4 of what AIU thought I owed. I paid it just to be done with the scam. Schyster said I wouldn’t be able to go back to AIU until I paid up the difference - yes, I chuckled. If a class action is formed, go ahead and include me. I think I can dig up all the BS paperwork and emails as evidence of how AIU is scamming hard working citizens and veterans out of their monies. rick.cranium@***.com
