If you are seeking medical attention from a urologist, please do not go to Dr. Ira Tanzer in Secaucus, NJ. It is my contention that he is only in the medical field for the money and when it comes to addressing patient complaints about his staff, he would rather get rid of the patient instead of addressing the problem, which is exactly what he did to me. Last December I was in a separate room awaiting the results of a urine analysis when his wife who was helping out offered me magazines. She made a racial comment. She apologized for the cover of People magazine being dark and hoped I didn't mind that the people on the cover were black. She was referring to a picture of Barack Obama and his family! I was shocked she had the gall to say that. Then she insisted three times in a row she was kidding. When I informed the office manager about this, she advised me to put my complaint in writing so they could address the matter and that is what I did. Dr. Tanzer then wanted to speak to me and when I got in touch with him, he screamed at me and refused to see me for any more appointments because I put my complaint in writing and he can't have contention in his office and he wouldn't believe me about what his wife had said to me. He was really horrible about it, telling me I should have only said something about this on my own time and not in his office. He insisted that nothing was said and that it was all my interpretation of non-verbal cues when the reality is that he wasn't even there. He made no attempt to address this matter with his staff. He wouldn't acknowledge he wasn't there and he wouldn't at least tell them to watch what they say to patients. Ever since this has happened, I have realized that in all this time, I have never seen a single black, Hispanic, or Asian patient in his office. Every single patient there is white like me which to me, indicates a racial bias. After this happened, I also began to question whether he really cared about me as a patient like I thought he did because he told me I have "an acute illness" and that he doesn't have to treat me. What acute illness is he talking about? I think this was just a bogus statement to justify insurance payments for continued testing because he never even said anything to me before about my having an acute illness. I was following up with him after kidney stone surgery I had done 2 years ago and I felt he was being appropriately thorough and concerned but eventually, all he wanted me to do was keep coming back for a KUB exam and urine analysis. Except for a minor bout of prostatitis, all of my test results have consistently come back negative and I am no longer in any pain. Despite that, he has wanted me to continue going back for testing. I am not even going to a urologist at this time because if I'm no longer in pain and my testing comes out negative, there is no point. Also, be very skeptical if his office address is listed in the physician directory of your insurance company. His office is not listed under his own name but under the name of his former partner Dr. Louis Di Bella who is now retired and whether or not that is legal, I find that very misleading. It might also interest you to know that this doctor actually has his private home address and phone number listed in the yellow pages which doctors are not supposed to do for their own protection. I have no interest in tracking him down but that too pretty disturbing. I never thought I would say this but this doctor's demeanor is childish. Needing attention for urological problems is humiliating enough and we certainly don't need doctors who are going to humiliate us even more.
