Traveling and not getting appointment to renew passport

I had been on the phone for last 2 days to get my sons passport as it expires on 10 Aug and we are traveling on 13 Aug. The customer service after 2-3 hours of wait time is telling me that they are not able to help us and there are no appointments anywhere in the east coast. This is AWFUL!!! We are supposed to have a family reunion and I can't just leave my 10 year old son home. The airline and resort tickets are so expensive and there is no refund policy!
