Subpar Work Environment

Doesn't Recommend Negative New Outlook I worked at The Academy Schools full-time (Less than a year) Pros It's a good job coming out of college. As a report writer, you get your own office, but the other report writers who are part-time share an office. Usually left alone to do your job without management being a helicopter over you, which is nice. Had an understanding and pleasant supervisor. Being trained can be the fun part. It's easy to write reports. Cons The job of writing reports can be repetitive and boring, and usually can be countered with headphones to listen to podcasts or music. It was also necessary, because of the background noise of the heater/ac, the humidifier, the refrigerator, and the nearby classroom. Expect to write at least 3 reports per day. Other staff do come in and out of the office since there's a refrigerator in it where they store food and snacks. Staff complained to management that my legs were on the desk while I worked (which promotes relaxation and creativity) in MY office, because apparently it looks like one isn't working in that position; plus, the chair couldn't be adjusted so it was almost required. Most employees are genuinely nice, but some can be two-faced. The job requires emailing other coworkers for student information. They are usually super slow, too "busy", or seem unwilling to send the information. The information you find online is also, in some cases, not regularly updated, so you feel like you're writing the same stuff over and over for each new report period. The company and management were disorganized at first. The "office" is through an active classroom, was freezing, and stank due to a refrigerator that wasn't cleaned and didn't have the drip catcher changed. The humidity machine was old and didn't work. In order to change the heater/ac, it required pliers due to the knobs being missing (bring your own pliers!). The chair (which was very old) for the desk couldn't be raised or lowered, so the natural remedy was to put the feet up on the desk. There is a lack of storage space for everyone, so this "office" is usually where some things are stored. It practically took 3 months for the refrigerator to be cleaned and changed and for them to bring a new humidifier. This was more due to the kindness of coworkers rather than management. When the heater was used, it spouted only cold air, and the *** had to be switched to cold for warm air to be emitted, which really wasn't that warm, because the rooms around the office area also dont receive warm air. The laptop you will receive will probably be an old handme down. When the charger didn't work for the laptop, I switched it with another person's charger, because IT was so slow to respond to the request. Also, the office didn't receive effective WiFi, so I had to use an Ethernet cable; it took a while for IT to finally deliver an Ethernet cable. The office floor isn't swept and the garbage can is sometimes not changed. The turnover rate is generally high for staff: I've seen and heard about plenty of employees (teachers, counselors, etc) leaving. It's crazy hearing about so many employees quitting. You will work with adjudicated students and a school that is on a budget and has subpar standards, so that is to be expected. The students may want to be your friend and say hello for manipulation depending on your position, but some are genuinely nice. The student's on the first floor, when they are in the hallway, will take up all the hallway space and seem unwilling to move or make space for you to walk in the hallway, which is pretty rude, but that's expected. The lunch food can make some people's stomach hurt sometimes (mine included which is rare for food to do that to my stomach), but the food quality is generally good. The bathrooms can stink. When I log onto my computer in the morning, I find that a management's username is left there, so there is also someone else using my laptop after work... which is disturbing. For holidays, you will be forced to work a rotating shift which means you work some holidays and some you don't. They can force you to work midnight to the morning for the holidays. Their rationale is that this is the best way to provide all staff with as many days off as possible for the holiday. They also provide a day off before that holiday shift, so they aren't required to pay you overtime. Youll hear people state that they hate their job or hate the kids. This negativity is infectious. You know it is true, but once you hear it, it's even worse. It takes three months to get benefits and one year to earn sick pay days. Also, work engagement is low. It's difficult to stay engaged with your job. You will want to bash your head through the laptop monitor and hope you die.Show Less Advice to Management Increase standards for everyone. Treat new employees very well, and make sure all needs and requests are met quickly. Put on your new hire's shoes for an hour and go through what they do to create empathy. Be organized for new hires. Appreciation and treating employees well is good for retention. In short... increase standards.
