Strong chemical and taste of saltine crackers.

I sent unopened sleeve of crackers with my husbands lunch. He called to ask where did I get them and that they had a strong chemical smell and taste. The box is not expired. What could cause this? I would like to receive a coupon for free box. User's recommendation: I would give the crackers a good sniff before purchasing.
