Ron Southwick’s behavior is in opposition to the fundamental tenants of the martial arts

1

Ron Southwick teaches Tae Kwon Do at Michigan State University. His position as an instructor is unclear. He teaches a credit earning class during the day and an informal class that meets three evenings each week. There is a martial arts instructor over him, though he is reluctant to inform anyone who that is. Even though Ron Southwick has some positive qualities, he is an instructor to be avoided at all costs. His positive qualities are his competence as a martial artist, his ability to lead a class, and his popularity among some students. Despite this, he is immature and intense in his interpersonal interactions. He fosters clicks in which some students become a part of the in-group. He scapegoats others by mocking them or saying negative things about them, sometimes when they are within hearing distance. Ron Southwick socializes with students outside class who are in their early twenties. He arranges weekend outings in which they wear their MSU Tae Kwon Do jackets and go to bars looking for fights. In class, Ron Southwick is violent with students he doesn't like, and will physically hurt them when sparring. He arranges these situations in advance, making sure his buddies will come to his aide if he starts to lose. It goes without saying that Ron Southwick's behavior is in opposition to the fundamental tenants of martial arts, which is to use one's ability for self-defense. Ron Southwick's behavior is inexcusable and is unfortunate for a person of his talent.
