Where should items be placed?

Question for Australian pasts: if the postman does not find the mailbox (assuming it is not due to brutal negligence,) does the shipment have to be left somewhere in the stairwell? And I'm not talking about ads that fill boxes, but about a real addressed letter, which I waited impatiently for several days and which caused a lot of worry and even unnecessary expenses. I'll add that the mailbox was found for both Christmas greetings and other items in advance.
