Quality issues and bad customer service

1

We contracted OceanBlu Renovations based in Frisco, TX for paver type of deck around our pool including the new coping in June 2019. The original deck was a concrete connected to the pool coping. The job included the old deck removal, the old coping removal, the new larger drain installation, the new coping installation, the new paved deck installation, the pool cleaning and when filled with water, water chemical balancing. The estimated project time was 15 business days. The project started on July 1st, 2019 and was completed on July 18th, 2019, which is 12 business days. The job would be finished even sooner, but there were some delays due to weather. When job was finished, it looked as expected and to our satisfaction. My only problem during the installation process was the fact, that the crew was using power tools which was constantly tripping a breaker in the power breaker box. To allow a crew to reset the breaker, we left a garage door opened for them, so they can access the box easily. I did not anticipate that a very sticky dust would settle on the surface of the car parked in the garage. The layer had a feel of a sandpaper and removing required use of a clay bar and a few hours of labor. I felt it was partially my fault, so I did not tell anybody and dealt with it on my own. However, troubles with quality of the performed work started a few days later. We noticed that joining sand which is used to fill and connect pavers joints, started to deteriorate and gaps up to 3/8 started appearing. We called the contractor to take care of this issue. When Tim (the guy in charge) came to see what our problem is, he discovered, that in one area, instead of joining sand, an ordinary sand was used. He called his crew and problem was fixed. After a few weeks joints started separating again. This time, I had to listen to the lecture that this is supposed to happen. I argued that those cracks will cause the problem during the winter when water gets there and if freezes, the joint is going to get destroyed. And simply, the deck did not look as we were brought to believe it would look like. After some resistance, the deck was fixed. When I took a closer look how a new drain was installed, I found out that drain was not connected as we requested, which was to the existing French drain. Instead, the new drain was rerouted and leading water to the side of the house where the pool equipment is located and flooding it. It took a few days going back and forward, listening the argument about doing it this way for decades, but ultimately the drain was reconnected the way as originally requested. A part of the contract was a pool cleaning after the deck installation. It was done, but I found later that the pool pluming system was filled with send all the way the pump. To avoid another unpleasant communication with Mr. Tim, I decided to take care of this on my own. One year passed, there was not freeze during the winter, just very mild winter. Our deck has an appearance of a very old and tired deck. There is an extensive deterioration of joints. This damage is not only between the deck and coping, but in perpendicular direction to coping too. This needs to be addressed. So, we contacted OceanBlu Renovations (Mr. Tim) by e-mail with pictures attached. His response was thank you for pictures.. joints are doing what they are supposed to do.buy the joining compound.and fix it on your own This response and lack of responsibility is quite troubling. Not even a suggestion that company would fix the problem. We were charged around $19,000 for the product which did not even last one year. This company does not take any responsibility for the quality of their work. This behavior contradicts to published reviews on OceanBlu Renovations website. Most likely they were written by their friend or buddies. I am in an agreement with negative reviews on Yelp, which are far less kind to OceanBlu Renovations. OceanBlu Renovation people (specifically arrogant Mr. Tim) are just immoral, unprofessional people, who represent exactly what every homeowner should be beware of. We paid a significant amount of money for this kind of job and company refuses take any responsibility. The outcome of their job is not what we were told and shown what it is going to be. User's recommendation: DO NOT HIRE THIS COMPANY, YOU GET SCREWED!!!!
