Phones gone downhill. Horrible customer service.

Ordered an HTC phone. Love the HTC, but SO expensive. Had buyers remorse and within minutes called HTC to cancel. Put on hold so the rep could contact shipping to stop the shipment. Put me on hold for several minutes. Came back and said all was well and that I would get my refund next day and gave me a confirmation number. I apologized and said I thought I would wait until the prices go down and the rep said he understood and that prices often do go down in November. He said he understood that many can no longer afford the high end HTC phones and the company is working on more affordable versions. Day later I get an e-mail saying that I would soon get instructions on how to process a return to get my money back. Return what? Then another e-mail saying they were unable to process my return as the item had been shipped and that my credit card was charged and that the items coming to me might have to be returned to different places and that would be my responsibility and that I wouldn't get a refund until all items were returned to one or more places AND wouldn't get a refund until "5-7 working days" from those various places receiving the items. Said if I didn't want the item, I could refuse it, if possible, but still wouldn't get a refund until the item was returned. The item isn't a delivery that requires a signature so how can I refuse it? I have ordered my last 3 phones from HTC. Luckily no issues, as I can see customer service would have been a REAL issue. Next to BBB and write to Consumer affairs where HTC U.S. Office is. Grrrrr. This is Almost $1,000, so not a small deal.
