I used to be a resume writer for this company. Well...sort of. JC Resume contracts the work out to a company called "Talent Inc," and I was a writer at Talent Inc. JC Resume claims that "The résumé writing team at JC Résumés is composed of professional writers who have spent years in staffing, human resources, professional proofreading and editing, and the job placement industry." This is the current verbiage from its websites, and similar claims were made during the time I was writing for them. Unfortunately, it's a total lie. I had zero experience in resume writing, zero experience in staffing and HR, and zero experience in the job placement industry, and zero experience as a professional writer. I had a writing degree and had taught writing classes for a few years prior, but that was my only qualification. You'd think I would have received some training due to my gross lack of experience, but I didn't. There was a brief and confusing phone call that explained how to use the Talent Inc job assignment system, and I was handed some templates to use for resume and cover letter writing, but that was it. The untrained resume writers have very little support internally, so there is nobody to turn to when problems arise or there are strange situations that come up. They just have to figure it out. They also have to perform customer service and problem solving on top of writing because there is no staff in place for that. (At least, there wasn't while I was there.) On top of all this, the pay is abysmal. Writers get paid a flat fee for each resume. By the time the job is done, the hourly pay is barely above minimum wage...sometimes less. So, it's no wonder that a lot of writers have a bad attitude and do the bare minimum necessary to collect their pathetic check. The writers are also treated very poorly by the company, at least when I was there. The company didn't follow the rules in its own handbook about reassigning jobs, how to request work, and so on. The leadership was condescending, and sometimes even mean. So, besides receiving no training and *** pay, the writers are treated badly too. It's a perfect storm for a poor customer experience.
