Well, the carpet was clean...Unfortunately, they punched a large hole in the drywall on the staircase (a very difficult place to repair) and then wouldn't own up to it. They insisted there must have been prior damage, even though there was no evidence of prior damage, and that their little "tap" must have just exposed a poor repair job. Two days before, I had combed the staircase, repairing small dents and scuffs (because I just bought this house) and I knew it like the back of my hand. There's no way this wall was broken before. These guys also made several other scuffs on the walls and corners. However, I only asked that they repair the hole, because I could do the other stuff. They avoided responsibility and shiftily left me with a gaping hole in my brand new house. Thanks.
