Canine Vaccination Warning

1

I took my dog to the VIP clinic at Pet Food Express to get her vaccinations. She was given the following vaccines at one time: Bordetella injection Leptospirosis 4 way Rabies Defensor 3 (CA) 5in1 (DA2P + parvovirus) Twenty minutes later, she was having severe reactions: throwing up multiple times, falling on her side, jerky body movements and unable to walk. I rushed her to the emergency vet. She was on IV fluids, various medications, had a fever, a spinal tap, an MRI, an x-ray, and required 24/7 monitoring. They said she had neurological problems, vestibular ataxia, and an allergic reaction they called anaphylactic shock. She should not have been administered that many vaccines at the same time, because she only weighed seven pounds. A week later, a pound less and $8,100 in emergency vet expenses, I was finally allowed to bring her home. She hadn’t eaten in seven days and when I got her home I hand fed her and she started eating a small amount. Slowly by slowly she regained her appetite and got stronger. When I dropped her off at the vet, I didn’t know if she was going to survive. She did recover fully and I thank God, as well as the dedicated staff at VCA in Rohnert Park. If you have or know of someone who has small dogs and goes to the pop-up clinics for shots, please warn them not to have them administer more than one shot at a time. Rather, plan the shots at least two weeks apart, so you’ll know which one was responsible if there’s an adverse reaction. Or better yet, find a local vet that you trust. The money you think you’re saving by going to clinics, good end up costing you a fortune. But you could end up losing a lot more than money, you could lose your beloved pet. As an added note, the manufacturer of the vaccines paid $3,000 toward the vet bill. User's recommendation: While it may be inconvenient to stagger the vaccinations, the risk of not doing so could be costly.
