Self checkout Employee behavior

Today 7/24 at Bolingbrook Costco I did purchase thru self checkout at 1pm. I have asked the person at self checkout with hand scanner to assist scanning as I had few little heavy items. But he rejected and said "As you are in self checkout, you suppose to do yourself" in that case why Costco has employees with scanner at self checkout. Don't want to argue with him. Just did my billing, raised a verbal Complaint to a supervisor and came out. Never had such a terrible experience in my past 6 years of Costco experience.
