BBVA Compass and VISA — What the heck!
1
Currently, I have fairly new personal and business checking accounts and a savings at BBVA Compass. About 2 weeks ago, after having breakfast with my granddaughter at Denny's, I decided to use my personal VISA debit card instead of cash. The cashier told me it was declined, AND without hesitating, stated my balance and turned the screen for me to see! HOW HORRIFYING!! Why does the merchant need to know my available balance? All they need to know is approved or declined!! I called BBVA Compass to request my available balance be blocked from merchants. BBVA said they weren't aware merchants had that access and they would look into it. Today, Tina at BBVA called back and said VISA isn't aware merchants have that type of access. In order for it to be blocked, they need a screenshot of the cashier's screen. So basically, BBVA Compass wants me to return to Denny's, run my card, let Denny's employee(s) see my balance again, and try to take a picture for them! What stupidness! I called because I don't want ANY merchant to see my balance! When I asked why they don't just call Denny's themselves, BBVA said this is the only way they can continue with my request -- they have to see the screen to be able to block it. WHAT?? Three conversations with BBVA and this is the result! I opened my accounts a few months ago. Since then most of my conversations with BBVA both by phone and in the branch have left me frustrated! Their voices sound pleasant but their actual service sucks! As for VISA, I've used VISA debit cards for years. This isn't the first time this has happened. I just never called about it before. I can't be the only cardholder who wants their balance to be a private matter. Why is it public information?
