Question regarding passport

Hi, I am both American and Nigeria citizen. I will be travelling to Nigeria but my Nigerian passport has expired which I will renew over there. On Delta airline website on international travel said that Nigerian Nationals were allowed to travel with their expired passport. I just want to get clarification on this so it won't affect of flying.
