Don’t buy any gifts; that you can’t return right away

I put some items on layaway for a family member for Christmas. Prior to starting the layaway, I asked the salesperson if it was okay to return the items because the items would be used for Christmas. The layaway was put on at the end of October and had to picked up in November. The salesperson told me yes, even if it's Christmas I couldn't get my money back but I could get store credit. I was fine with that. So fast forward to today 12/27/19. I took the items that my family member couldn't fit back to the store in the same condition I purchased them in with the receipt. I was told they could not accept the items nor could I get store credit. Now, I am stuck with $45 worth of merchandise that I can't do anything with. I wasn't looking for any money at all, I was looking for store credit. I had already walked around the store and picked out a few items that would compensate for the items I was returning. Needless to say, I won't be purchasing anything else from Rainbow stores at all. I called customer service as soon as I got back to work to report the issue. I was left on hold for 20 minutes & then the phone disconnected.
