Think Again…and Again and Again!

Are you thinking of contracting a job with "Great American Home Remodeling"? Think again. What follows is a letter I wrote the company regarding their business practices. It is also an attachment to a formal complaint I am filing with the Contractors State License Board, Department of Consumer Affairs. As you can see, you're better off looking at some other company for remodeling your home. Carlos, in November of 2018, I gave "Great American Home Remodeling" a check for $1000 for bathroom remodeling. After your partner told me that my deposit would be returned because the bathroom could not be remodeled for the contracted price of $10,000 (unless I demolished the existing tub myself or paid your company an extra $3000), you showed up at my house and said you could do it. Then you proceeded to change what I wanted done, such as a wooden vanity instead of pedestal sink and laminate instead of tiles, etc, etc. I was overwhelmed. You made it seem as if you were doing me a favor. However, we had a contract as to what would be done. On reflection after you left, I knew that what you offered was no longer the bathroom I had agreed to purchase from your company. Six months from the date I made out the check to "Great American Home Remodeling," I am still waiting for the return of my deposit. You, yourself, ignored my near-daily phone calls for months. After repeated excuses from your office as to why you couldn't speak to me, I finally left a message two weeks ago with your receptionist that I would have to file in small claims court. That irritated you, as you let me know on the phone. That is when the serious harassment began. You made me waste whole days waiting for the check, always holding it just out of my reach, including yesterday when I sat outdoors waiting until 6 PM...on your word. When I called in the evening, you said you were with a customer and that the check would be in my mailbox this morning. Of course, it wasn't. It's the game you've been playing. Do you feel that you're the cat, and I'm the mouse. Well, you've certainly been chewing me up. After six months of waiting and waiting and waiting, I've reached the end of what I can do on a person-to-person basis. I don't want to hurt anyone, but I need my money. I've tried repeatedly to resolve our problem equitably without involving anyone else, but I've reached the end of what I can do alone. I'm not going to continue being chewed and clawed up anymore. I don't know if this is just you or if "Great American Home Remodeling" is pulling a scam on senior citizens. I'm 70 years old and just grieved and buried my mother in northern Maine two weeks ago, as you know, with all the funeral and travel expenses that her death entailed. I need that $1000, Carlos. For that reason, I am forced to file a formal complaint with the Contractors State License Board, Department of Consumer Affairs. Your company needs to be investigated regarding its business practices. Is your company a scam? Should I post this complaint on YELP? This cat and mouse game you continue to play with me is scary. Am I in physical danger?
