My loan turned over to nasty collection company

I borrowed $500.00 , and was making payments until I lost my job due to my department being shut down. I informed First Virginia of what was going and was told this was noted on my account. They later apparently sent this to an outside collections agency for over double the amount I borrowed. If someone had financial difficulty, why would they think a person could afford to pay them double the amount. I will not refer anyone to this company. I called them as I am willing to make payments on the account but from $500 to over $1100 is why I'm unhappy. I borrowed once before and things went fine. I was employed and paid the loan out. I ran into trouble this time which was unforeseen. I even referred someone to them after the first time I borrowed. I think they should be a little more understanding this time around.
