Due Date vs. Last Payment Due

So my monthly payment is due on the 20th of the month. I paid faithfully for the 17 months on the 16th. My last payment was to be $31.08 so it went thru on the 16th...then I find out that it was due before the 14th. So I know owe another $542. What a rip off...why wouldn't my due date be before my plan's end date?
