Do not use HSA!!!

1

This company uses subpar contractors who often can't do the repair. To make matters worse, our last few months with them caused $7000 in damage to my home and their response is "It's not our problem". They sent an HVAC company out to repair my AC and after they left it was still blowing hot. Called back and they sent the same company back who diagnosed as needing a new motor. 6 days later the new motor was put in but the tech didn't tell me he was going to cut and replace the vent and clean out pipe on my air intake unit. He put it back uphill and caused a leak behind my wall for 6 days until we saw it. We needed water mitigation and all Sheetrock and insulation replaced in my master bathroom and of course the pipes returned to proper working order. After fighting with HSA contractor to repair the damage they did they finally paid the $5000 a month and a half later. Next my downstairs unit was blowing warm (most likely because we were so long without the upstairs unit in summer in NC) and they wanted to send the same compny. I declined and they sent a different one. This one was almost as bad. Instead of finding and repairing a leak, he pumped some freon into it and assured me it was fixed because I was moving and putting the house up for sale. Fast forward 1 month ahead and the house was under contract and having an inspection. The HVAC inspector said that the coil was frozen and would need to be replaced. After telling him about the HSA contractor repair, he said when an AC unit needs a lot of freon it is because there is a leak. By charging it with extra freon and not fixing the leak they destroyed my evaporator coil. I called HSA and told them this and offered to show them the report and photos, but their reply was again "not my problem". They wanted me to pay for another service call and send out the same companies that already caused a lot of damage and proved to be unable to fix my units. I said I would not have them again, especially knowing I would not be there to watch them. They offered me a third choice which had been in business less than a month. I looked up business number 3 and the address showed a bush, not a house or business. Given the circumstances I declined that contractor and asked to provide my own. Their supervisor said I could do that and then try submitting the invoice for payment. I did and no surprise, they would not pay it. I paid to fix it so I knew it would be fixed properly and I could in good conscience sell my house. I did contact the consumer advocate of NC, but he said unfortunately they can legally hide behind 2 things in their contract. One is that they can send any contractor of their choice, qualified or not. And 2 is that they are never responsible for the damage caused by the contractors they force you to use. So while unethical and very bad business practice they can do this legallly. I was advised that I could go after them with a small claims case and present it all to a judge who can make a decision, so we may very well do that. My advice to anyone looking for a home warranty company is to avoid them at all costs. The better way to go is to take the $500- 800 you would pay per year and put it in a separate savings account for home repairs.
