$50 gift not honored by Target.

On 12/22/20 I purchased three $50 gift cards. Prior to giving the cards to family, I checked the balance online for one of the cards and found it had a zero balance. I called the 800 # and gave the information from my receipt. After more than a week I received the following response from Target. "Our team's research suggests that the card's balance was checked on a website that isn't affiliated with Target causing the gift card information to be compromised. Because of this, we're unable to replace your gift card." Where did the money go? Am I suppose to just accept this loss. User's recommendation: Be very careful with Target gift cards.
