Fraud, Non-Feasance, Malfeasance, Dereliction, Theft…
I purchased a home warranty through the Select Home Warranty Company for my home's appliances and systems back on March 3, 2020. As a matter of fact, I purchased the top of the line plane they had because I believe in Murphy's Law (anything that can go wrong, will go wrong) and I believe in being prepared! Yes, I was a Boy Scout, and an Eagle Scout, and a Soldier. In June of this year, we had a massive heatwave with high temperatures and crushing humidity! In fact, with the Heat Index, 104(f) was the coolest day we had that week. And, of course, the air conditioner's condenser (condenser or compressor? I'm not sure what the difference is, so I'll just say compressor from here on out) decided to crap out in the middle of it. Ever since then, even though the weather has cooled, the conditioners just runs and runs (you can hear the fan spinning away) but it does nothing as far as cooling the house. Occasionally I will feel a small gust of cool air come up from the floor vent, but mostly it just runs without engaging or cooling the house at all. On June 14, 2020, I opened a case with Select Home Warranty regarding the air conditioner. They said that they would have a repair person out to my house in between 24 and 48 hours. This did not happen. I called to find out what was going on and they said that they were having trouble finding a service provider in my area. They even asked me to find one for them. This is NOT my job and they can do a Google search just as well as I can. But, despite this, I gave them the names and telephone numbers of 10 local HVAC repair companies. Two more days later and I still had not heard a word from Select Home Warranty. We started making calls to them and sending emails every day. Within about 10 or 12 days, they finally said that they had a service person coming two days later, which was a Wednesday. On Wednesday morning I got a call from the service provider asking me if I had his $200 service fee ready. I informed him that my sarranty says $60, not $200. He asked what home warranty company and he advised me that he doesn't have a contract with Select Home Warranty and he wouldn't honor their commitments, but if I wanted him to come out and do the work and submit the bills for reimbursement to Select Home Warranty, that he would be happy to do that. I declined. We contacted Select Home Warranty again and told them what happened. They made an appointment with another provider and told us that they made the appointment with someone named "Moe". It turned out that this provider doesn't have a contract with Select Home Warranty either and that his company only has 4 employees and none of them were named Moe. We advised Select Home Warranty of this, angrily, and some to someone in the "Loyalty Department" which is supposedly the highest level of customer service they have. I explained everything that had come to pass and the person I spoke with set up another appointment with yet another provider, and that this time he had spoken to "Phyllis". The exact same thing happened! No contact with Select Home Warranty and nobody working there named Phyllis! At that point I called Select Home Warranty back, and I was in rare form. I explained to them the very severe penalties for false advertising in the New England states, the fact that both the Massachusetts Attorney General and Secretary of State offices have separate Consumer Protection Divisions and that if there was ANY more *** I would be making a complaint against them with both. The young lady I spoke with was very apologetic and seemed very sincere when she guaranteed me that she would have someone, under contract, at my house within 48 hours. That was a week ago and I've heard nothing back. The problem is that when you call for help at Select Home Warranty, you don't get anyone who actually works for the company! They use a call center to handle their customer service. Then I called back the two plumbers that said they didn't have a Moe or a Phyllis, and it turns out that both providers use an answering and scheduling service. So no wonder nothing is getting done! All we've got is a call center talking to another call center! It's now been one month and none days and STILL nobody has even come to look at my air conditioner! I went out and spent nearly $400 buying a couple of window units to use in the interim, but they really aren't helping much I'm physically disabled. Among other issues I have is COPD. I literally cannot be in that kind of heat and humidity without going through a rescue inhaler a day - which alone could give me a heart attack and kill me! The reason that I chose Select Home Warranty was because their website links up a page from the Better Business Bureau saying that the company had only one complaint, and that it was handled quickly to the customer's satisfaction. It showed that they had a 4.8/5 rating. But that page was clearly fake, because I went to the BBB website and did a search for Select Home Warranty and discovered that they have over 4,300 unresolved complaints against them with a 1.39/5 rating! That's literally the worst rating of all of them!!! That is straight up fraud! Also, the BBB reports that the 4,300 unresolved complaints are just since 2016. It doesn't count any during the two years that the company was put out of business between 2014 and 2016, not does it count the number of unresolved complaints from 2014 and before! I went to the Massachusetts Secretary of State's Corporations Database and discovered that they don't even have a business license in this state. Nor did they have one in Rhode Island, Connecticut, New Hampshire, etc. I was looking for their Registered Agent for Service of Process so that I could send that person a demand letter and a notice of breach along with a threat to sue them for specific performance under the contract. But, again, they aren't registered in this state! So, I started with Maine and I headed south, along the coast, and checked every state. They don't even have a license to do business in their own home state of New Jersey! In fact, the only state in which they did have a registered agent is Louisiana. Only the Louisiana database had more than just the registered agent. They had the name of the owner (Joseph Shrem) and his home address in Brooklyn, NY as well as his office address in Mahwah, NJ. And the shadiest thing of all that they've been doing is that four times now they've told us to just find out own provider and get the work done and submit it for reimbursement. For one thing, that isn't my job - it's their job! But, more than that, I have thoroughly reviewed the service contract with Select Home Warranty and it spells out very clearly that to do either would void the warranty! I have to find a way to force Select Home Warranty to do what they're supposed to do with respect to my air conditioning, but I would highly recommend that anyone who may be on the market for a home warranty plan avoid Select Home Warranty like the plague! Two of the providers that Select Home Warranty tried to send here said that they do have service contracts with Choice Home WarrantyavoiAvoifS, so maybe try thenm.them? User's recommendation: Avoid Select Home Warranty at ALL COSTS!!!!
