Bad car rental experiece

I reserved a vehicle for my trip. I showed up on the date and time of the reservation just to be told that there was no vehicle for me. Avis should have let me know ahead of time that there was no vehicle to be had so my driving trip there would not be wasted and that not the mention the planned business trip. Was this a case of Avis overbooking for Avis' profits and not caring about customers?
