Unscrupulous Landlord
1
I intended to move to Austin from California in mid Dec 2020. I rented a location in Austin (Quiet cul-de-sac with TONS of fruit trees, purported landlord: Carolyn Coffey) in late Oct to take occupancy on Dec 15 for 2 months while I located a permanent residence. I signed a lease and gave the the landlord a $2700 deposit (1/2 Dec. + security deposits). I was going to drive from CA to Austin but as we got into November, Covid reared its ugly head again. Due to my compromised health and not knowing where we would be on the Covid trajectory by Dec 15, I decided it was safer to stay in CA and not drive to Austin. So three weeks after I signed the lease and paid Carolyn Coffey $2700, I explained why I needed to cancel. That was on Nov 16, giving her 30 DAYS to put the property back on the market. (she had a tenant in the unit until Dec 15) She has played games with me ever since, saying she would refund some of the money but never has. In the meantime, I see that the unit is NOT available on Furnished Finders until Feb 1. Did she rent it out to someone else? I don't know. I am not in Austin where I might be able to discover more. My only recourse is small claims court. I feel entirely ripped off by Furnished Finders and will NEVER use them again. I'll pay the bit extra for Airbnb, where I am protected against this kind of unscrupulous landlord behavior. User's recommendation: Stay Away!
