Unable To Compromise On Reservation Refund

1

In October, 2017 my husband and I paid AAA a sizable amount of money to reserve 1st class seats on Copa Airlines, for a trip we had wanted to take in August, 2018 to celebrate our 40th wedding anniversary. Since planning that trip we encountered several large expenditures for things such as a new washer and dryer we had to buy and a motor for our furnace, along with several others that made affording the trip we had wanted to take impossible. We made the reservations, thinking that the tickets were fully refundable, as that was what Copa's website showed when we were trying to make arrangements ourselves. Being members of AAA since 1994, we thought we would take advantage of their travel planning instead. We paid them the money in October, but told them in February we wanted to cancel and asked for our money back. They told us a refund was not possible unless there was a death in the family or one of us had become gravely ill. At that point, we had hoped the airline, AAA and/or the travel insurance company we purchased travel insurance with would collaborate and compromise to come up with at least half of our money in a refund for the tickets we paid for. The airline wouldn't talk to us since we bought the tickets through AAA and AAA talked us in circles at first, telling us to talk to the airline. Long story short, AAA is now losing our membership because they have refused to compromise with us. There are many reasons a person needs to cancel a trip and not really being avid/experienced travelers, we assumed if we had to cancel we could get our money back. We feel AAA, the airline and the travel insurance company each make enough money to collectively compromise with us. We found AAA to be rigid, condescending and arrogant with us over this issue and initially sent us on a wild goose chase to try and resolve the situation with people they knew would be unrelenting in their refusal to help us, not to mention misleading us into thinking the tickets we first saw on Copa's website were the same tickets we paid for with AAA, described as "Fully Refundable" but since finding out the travel agent at AAA sold us "Promotional" tickets. Extremely frustrated with a company we have done business with for over 24 years.
