Trees arrived at the wrong time

I made a rather large donation early in 2018 and was signed up for the free trees. By the end of fall, I had given up on the trees but lo and behold, they arrived late in December (we are in NJ); the ground was frozen and it was quite cold. The instructions stated that the trees be planted on arrival to stay alive and that they should be planted in the fall when the ground isn't frozen. Now, how am I supposed to reconcile that? We planted them anyway as instructed, as the instructions stated that they would die if not planted. If you are a company that is promoting the health and well-being of trees, then this doesn't make me very confident in your abilities.
