The “Sales Process” went well until a surprise bill came

My husband and I, who live in Florida went to Columbus SC to help our son who lives there, to negotiate a lease on a new vehicle. A few months after he had the vehicle, he receives a $1000.00 bill from the county saying he owes $1000.00 for property tax on the new car. We are in our 60’s and have leased and purchased cars for many years. We’ve never heard of property tax on a vehicle. The sales person and sales manager new that all three of us are not from the area. (We are pretty thorough when purchasing/leasing,) making sure there will not be additional charges. At no time did anybody mention that to us. (Of course the standard answer is, it’s in the fine print of the contract). Totally appalled that this day and age the additional fees that a customer will receive is not explicitly explained to the seller. I blame the dealership as well as State laws for not enforcing disclosure VERBALLY to a buyer!!! I strongly feel that the dealer was negligent in not verbally disclosing that to us and should be responsible for the bill. Looking it up in the internet, the dealership can absorb that cost.
