Storage unit robbed

1.0 star rating 11/6/2017 READ before you rent! Secure Care Self Storage is neither secured, nor do they care. I had a situation that forced me to store everything I own in one of King Street's units. My mistake was putting a padlock on my unit door. At no time did Secure Care advise me that in the interest of security, that I only use the cylinder locks. I was unaware of how frequent this place is burglarized. I moved my stuff into my unit in June of 2016, and didn't visit my storage unit again until Dec. 2016. It wasn't until April that I went to my storage unit again. When I arrived, I discovered that there was a different lock on my unit - I thought it belonged to the facility, and thus I brought it to their attention. The next day, the Regional Manager, met me and my cousin at my unit so that he could cut the lock off - he acted like he had not a clue as to why there was a different (cylinder) lock on my unit. Upon opening it, my worst fears were realized; somebody(s) had broken in and had stolen everything I own. Everything I owned...just gone. Things that money could never buy...gone! I lost some $18k worth of property, and I was livid. Although the manager was somewhat sympathetic, he played "stupid" as to why my unit of all the units in the facility was burglarized; my cousin and I both could tell he was hiding something. I asked why don't you guys highly encourage or even require renters to use only cylinder locks - he of course had no response. He cringed when I asked how many break in's there have been at this location. According to the detective assigned to my case, King Street has had "a series of break in's". I also have an email that has the Regional Manager stating that "they" have turned over all surveillance video, but according to the detective assigned to my case, at no time did Secure Care send any surveillance video or anything to assist in the investigation. Since surveillance video lapses after a period of time, the Regional Manager's lie cost me any chance of spotting the vehicle leaving the front exit of the facility with my property. This of course brings up the questions of how did they have the code to get in, and how did they know to replace my lock with another. Be warned, there are a whopping 2 cameras...and I've since learned that they may not even be or have been operational - which would explain the Regional Manager lying to me about it. Not a single camera points at a storage unit, no alarms...this place is a joke. They honestly DO NOT care about the security of your property. I wrote their corporate office in Denver; I've heard nothing back. Be warned: the contract you sign with them gives them zero liability on just about everything...with the exception of negligence, and in my case blatant lying about turning over surveillance video is grounds for negligence. Here's the most disturbing part - the thieves that stole everything that I own, had to have used a large SUV or a truck. That's right folks...they drove right in, and drove right out, all under the watchful secured caring eye of the live in site management of Secure Care Self Storage.
