Starfire Professional DJ Entertainment Services

Also goes by Superior DJ, owned by Dr Jim McCluskey (the DJ). He is located in Xenia currently, but has also worked in MI and TX. I had a bad experience with this DJ for my parents 50th wedding anniversary in Kettering, OH. To be fair to Mr McCluskey, it turned out that the music/dancing aspect ended up being less important to our party than we had anticipated. Besides the music from this DJ, we had asked him to bring along a mixer and a few mics, since there would be speeches and some live music. He said he had all this equipment. He also advertises that he can take a video of the event where he walks around during dinner, interviews guests, etc. Before entering into a contract with this DJ, I did talk to one of his references, who had positive feedback. Our biggest complaint against this service provider was the equipment used for the music and the video. His cordless mic (which he kept telling me is a $2500 mic) stopped working just before the start of the entertainment. Thankfully he was able to fix this after about 1/4 of the 60 minute program. Another of the mic he had set up also stopped working at the very beginning, which we were never able to rectify. His biggest failing was the video. He uses a standard Sony camcoder (which I knew about). Unfortunately he did not have fully charged batteries! About 10 minutes into the program, his battery ran out. After that he had to take any video he tool with the camcorder plugged in, and so could not walk around at all. The video was worked not by himself, but his 13 year old daughter, who was obviously not very experienced. As if the gaps in the video were not bad enough, he ended up losing one of the dvds. So we ended up with less than half of the entertainment. This has really ended up being sad for us, because we ended up not having a meaningful video of such an important event in our lives. [I should have had a backup planned for the video.] Some pros/cons about this DJ Pros: - personable, was helpful and responsive in the days prior to the event - came to setup his equipment the day before Cons: - equipment badly organized. He kept claiming that it takes him 3 hours to load his equipment, but it is obviosly all thrown into his car. - equipment not very functional - non-working mics, video. - hyperbole .. likes to talk about how expensive his equipment is, and how much he prepares for a event. There were a number of things he said which struck me as very improbable. - mental stability - towards the end of our event, he suddenly got the notion that he had only 10 minutes to vacate the area. It was very concerning how he started throwing some of his equipment on the floor to try to quickly load his car again. Some of this kind of thing may explain why his equipment seems run down and does not always work. In conversations with him after the event, I mentioned to him how disappointed I was with the video. IN fairness (though not important because the lack of video is really priceless), I thought that he should refund the extra $50 for the video that he was charging. He did not want to do that. I thus overall think he is probably ok if all you need is music and some lights. For other things like video, mics, etc.., look for someone else.
