Split The Bills – don’t do it

Something Split The Bills (UK) don't tell you when signing up is that they are actually a bill management company. They are NOT a utilities provider. This means that they are outside the remit of ofgem (the UK Regulator) and can essentially get away with all sorts of bad practices that any standard gas or electricity supplier would never be allowed to do. The worst part is, if you have a problem with them, there is no ombudsman to turn to for a result. Your only course of action in the event of a dispute is to complain to them and then go to court! They say they try to adhere to the ofgem guidelines on maximum switching times and how long they have to bill you when you move, before they are forced to write off the debt. But what they don't tell you is they arent legally bound to follow those rules and if it suits them, they will chuck the rules in the bin and pursue you through debt collectors and the courts. I found this out the hard way when move out of a shared property and got a bill from them some 9 months or so later (after having already asked for the final bill). I pointed out that as per ofgem rules they had to serve the final bill sooner than that but they basically said they didnt care because those rules don't apply to them. I didn't pay and they passed it on to a debt collection agency. Essentially, unless you really don't trust the people you are living with, stick with 2 people being responsible for each utility bill and deal with it your selves as the rights you give up when dealing with the likes of Split The Bills or Glide are worth more! And you also usually get a better deal when going direct too!
