Small cylinder filter in decalcifier fell out

We have a perfect steam iron and a small plastic cylinder filter fell out when we drained the boiler water. This never happened before and it appears partly broken. Does it have to be replaced? Linda Schroeder Andy.schrowa3@***.com 1+504-914-****
