On Dec. 30 the gas heat failed on my 79 year old mother in laws home. I called AJ Perry for a emergency service call at 6 pm. I was given an appointment for the next morning at 11 am. I agreed to a $89 service price and a repair price after he checked the system. The tec. arrived at 11 am and 5 min. later informed me that the igniter on the unit was not working and it was $361 to have the part replaced. I agreed and 10 min. later the part was installed and I was than informed another part, the flame sensor was also bad for another $361. I told him I will only pay for the 1st part and to close up the unit. The bill came to $475. After he left I looked at the flame sensor and found no damage to the part, only that the sensor was very cold. Since this part needs to be warm to work, I warmed the sensor in my car dash vent. I it took 5 min. to plug in the flame sensor to the heater and the unit is now working fine. If I was not present the service tec. would have charged for this not needed part. I replace the flame sensor part on Jan. 2 from a HVAC distributor and the Flame sensor cost me $17 and the ignitor would have cost me $25 if I could have waited. To have this kind of mark up on Seniors during a declared State of NJ EXTREEM cold emergency should be a crime. PS. The supervisor offer a 10% parts discount before I sent the Tec. on his way.
