Regent Cruise Line Ruined Our 50th Wedding Anniversary

1

One year prior to our 50th wedding anniversary, my wife and I began to plan for our dream vacation to celebrate this special event. In July, 2018 I booked a transatlantic cruise on Regent Voyager. I was told by the Regent representative that I could use my Discover card to pay for the entire cruise. He placed a $2,500 deposit on my Discover card at that time. A few months later, Regent again charged my Discover card for additional $350 in airline fees, due to our departure point from home, and our plans to stay a few extra days in Barcelona at the conclusion of the cruise. My final payment for the cruise was due on December 22. I called the Regent agent on December 19 to pay the balance due, approximately $15,000. The agent informed me that Regent decided two weeks prior to no longer accept Discover cards and I would have to pay the balance in cash (I have no other credit card with that level of spending authorized). I told him they would have to accept my Discover card as final payment mechanism, since I had no other credit card to offer, and would not pay for such an expensive trip with cash or a check. After conferring with “the suits” (his words), he called me back to say Regent would not accept my card, even though I was never called about their change in policy, nor was I e-mailed about such a change. I told him Regent would then have to refund the money I paid to date and cancel our plans for this once in a lifetime cruise. He said someone else would call me back. Awhile later that day, I received a call from another Regent representative, who stated they could no longer accept Discover card payments for their cruises, as they had changed their policy one week prior to my call to make the final payment. He further stated that if I did not pay the balance in cash, or use a different card, they would consider our cruise being cancelled, and we would forfeit the approximately $2,900 in payments we had already made to Regent, and had charged on our Discover card. Admittedly, thing got heated on my part, since I saw my plans for my wife and I to celebrate our golden anniversary being dashed. The representative hung up on me. I have made several attempts since then to get written confirmation about the status pf this cruise, but Regent has not responded to me.
