Red light problem

I have the big BLACK, counter top filter system and the light has changed from blue to red. Thinking that meant time to replace the filter, I did just that. I also ran water through a whole clear pitcher full (came with it) to clear the new filter of any residues because it is new. The light remains red flashing, not the blue. WHY?
