Plumbing Scam

I live in Proctorville, Ohio and called a number I believed to be the Huntington-based office of a company called Mr. Rooter, which I had successfully dealt with in the past for a plumbing problem. The woman who answered gave a different company name, but I just assumed the name had been changed. I told her two simple plumbing repairs that I needed. Several hours later, an old man showed up carrying a smartphone and no plumbing repair kit. I told him I had a dripping kitchen faucet. He stood back and looked at it and said I needed a new faucet, that it would not do any good to put in new parts. When I asked if he would look for the problem, he said, "I'd have to turn the water off to do that." I told him there was a valve right under the sink. He just shrugged and took a photo, telling me his boss was good at getting insurance companies to pay for things. I then showed him a broken flusher arm on one commode. He said he might have a replacement arm in his vehicle and left. He returned, telling me he did not have one and took a photo of the inside of the toilet. I then asked him if it was safe to just turn the water back on for another commode that had the water turned off for a while. He went to look at it, saw a cracked tank lid and proclaimed that I needed a whole new commode and repeated that his boss would see that the insurance company paid. I wonder if this man was even a plumber! I guess this company is in Ashland, KY, because the man stated that he had driven from there. I would have never engaged their services if I had not believed them to be the same people as the company I had used before! After talking to my insurance agent, I went to my bank and put a stop on the $60 service check I had given the "plumber". Better I pay the bank $35 for the stop service than these scammers! I emailed the company, telling them to forget any attempt to contact my insurance company, the agent of which told me I had a $500 deductible if I pursued such a claim. Online, I have read NUMEROUS complaints about this business. I wish I had known about them before!
