Off-duty police misbehavior at store

3

Dear official of Giant Eagle, First of all, I am retired (i.e. older) white female. I have some physical limitations and a Handicap placard. This is the scenario: Not too long after the murder of George Floyd, I was at the Giant Eagle in Clintonville to drop off some plastic recycling. As always, I pulled up on the concrete pavement right next to it. The rent-a-cop confronted me . Before he could say anything I told him what I was doing. He proceeded to reprimanded me for being on the concrete apron, stating that it wasn't meant to hold the weight of an automobile. (0f course, that is nonsense) Inside I was still furious over the recent murder and subsequent acknowledgement that the police are out of control. This arrogant "youngster" had the audacity to talk down to me as if I were five years old. I informed him that as long as there had been a recycling bin there, I had pulled up next to it. I left it at that as I did not want get into an argument with him nor tell him what I really thought of his behavior, nor the fact that I have seen huge beverage truck as well as armored bank trucks park on said space and I did not want to risk being arrested for "talking back" to him. It is unconscionable that I should feel fear of a police officer who currently has the power and authority to cause harm, physical and emotional, for something so slight, but he could have blown it out of proportion by claiming I was antagonistic and non compliant with his demands. To the best of my knowledge, you hire these off duty police to prevent shop lifting and/or the possibility of theft or endangerment of clientele by a thief lurking in the parking lot. I do not believe that you hire them to harass customers for harmless acts. I wanted to send an email to the local store manager, but have been unable to find an email address. I would appreciate it if you contacted them about this situation. Thank you, Diana de la Mer, a very long time customer of Giant Eagle and before that, Big Bear. May every sunrise bring you hope. May every sunset bring you peace.”
