Never Bought Anything but They Sold False Debt in Son’s Name

1

In January my son's personal information (DOB, social security number) was stolen. He received letters of credit denial in March from 2 companies, though he never requested credit. We put fraud alerts with all 3 credit bureaus. SmartPay Leasing had made an inquiry in January and chose to extend credit to someone using my son's information and online typed signature. In July he received a debt collection notice for $1,056.76 from a company SmartPay sold the debt to. SmartPay never tried to collect it themselves. That debt collection agency sent the debt to the credit bureaus. My son might have to retain an attorney. We have filed complaints with the FTC and local PD, but this debt collection agency keeps on coming at him thanks to SmartPay's lack of due diligence.
