The Marriott Vacation Club sales pitch we experienced was very high pressure and misleading. We were reluctant to purchase since we were retiring shortly but we asked if we could sell our points if things did not work out. We were told Marriott had a right of first refusal if we sold which I believed was their way of supporting the value of their product and also there would be a ready resale market with prices comparable, if not more than, we were paying ($10/point). We were not told anything to the contrary. Sadly that is not even close to the real story. According to a Marriott representative the going market rate is $4.00 and Marriott's right of first refusal was $2.13. So much for supporting the value of their product. I mentioned to them I just wanted to give them back their points and walk away but I was told I still would have to pay the remaining balance of the loan (14.25% annual interest rate). If I sell the points back to Marriott, I suspect they will merely resell them at the rate they are currently selling which I am told is in excess of $13.00. Considering just walking. On my last visit to Newport Beach they gave us another sales pitch but the price was $17.00 per point. Wonder what happened to the value since that time. I would never attend another sales pitch much less buy anything else from such an untrustworthy, high pressure group!! Remember the old saying "If it sounds to good to be true, it usually is".
