Lack of transperancy

E90DSLSDR Build 08/05 Cruising at idle to medium speed, the engine sometimes switches into limping mode and the max RPM is limited until engine stop and restart (reboot) is performed. The control box stores error 38 (oil pressure). The E-TEC is running with special E-TEC XD-100 oil. When looking at the small oil hoses leading from the oil pump to the engine block, small air bubbles inside the hoses are visible. Assumed that these air bubbles causing the problem, but after performing the air-out procedure (winterisation) several times, the problem still persisted. When cruising, new very small air bubbles enter the hoses and the alarm is back. Contacted Evinrude direct, but got no information on this issue. They referred us to service dealers. We brought the boat and engine for trouble shooting to our local Evinrude service dealer. They indicated not to know this problem, connected dialog, checked alarm codes but found nothing wrong. Next time we had the boat out on the water, the problem persisted. Learned online from other boat operators, that this was a known problem. Checked Evinrude parts online and found new oil switch assemblies available, inclusive software update. Again we contacted Evinrude direct, but were not informed and referred to our local dealer. Brought my boat again to the dealer and was still told that the problem was unknown to them, even we could see an old exchanged oil pump assembly in the workshop. But when we ask what was wrong with it, they seemed not to know. It was the Just change parts and software, dont ask questions and no more problem attitude. But as the new part kit inclusive software was very expansive and Evinrude would still not give us any information on why we had to change the oil pump, we requested our local service to just download the updated software for a try, as we could find nothing wrong with the oil pump assembly. They finally did the software update for us without the new expansive oil pump. Since that day all runs trouble free for almost three years now, without unnecessary alarms or power restrictions. No more dangerous limping situations on the open ocean. Assuming the new software had an alarm delay added to overcome the small and perhaps harmless air bubbles. Until today we have no confirmation on this issue from Evinrude or any of their dealers. It would have been very important for us to know, as our live depend on the engine on the open ocean. We gave up asking, feeling unsupported and treated badly by Evinrude. It is just this arrogant cover up strategy what makes us feel bad. After all we are engineers and understand a little. Believe as Evinrude customers we deserve better. We still like the product, but for our new boat, we are reluctant to buy another engine from a company covering up on technical issues and modifications. My new engine for my new boat will not be Evinrude for this reason alone. Believe that only a product with transparent service information can be trusted. User's recommendation: Buy only engines from manufacturers open to discuss technical issues.
