Battered by the hostwinds The technical capabilities of the web hosting company hostwinds appear solid but it's ethics seem questionable. It's just hot air Not so long ago I compiled a shortlist of the better known web hosting companies. I phoned them to see if they could really deliver on their promises. I selected hostwinds based on its money back guarantee and free migration service. These "confidence offerings" eased my uncertainty about moving all my sites to a new host. Unfortunately it proved to be hot air. Yeah right Within 60 days of opening your hostwinds account, if you are not satisfied with our services, we will refund your money. No questions asked. Money gone - promises broken I made the plunge, signed up and handed over my money to hostwinds. Then reality hit: hostwinds announced that it could not migrate my websites as it had promised. This was very troubling as I had stressed how critical it was that I have a smooth migration. A waste of effort I phoned hostwinds and complained about them wasting my time and over-promising. I checked that they would issue a full refund as per their promise. No problem sir we're on to it…! Months passed... I assumed hostwinds would do the right thing and promptly process a refund back to my credit card. By accident, sometime later I discovered hostwinds had reneged and kept my payment. Prove it buddy! I complained again and was asked to regurgitate hostwinds helpdesk tickets (which obviously hostwinds already had). Hostwinds finally acknowledged that it hadn't returned my payment but rather than offering an apology and promptly refunding my money it rudely dumped irrelevant terms and conditions on me (where was my refund ticket? Did I realise refunds were not issued after a certain period? Etc etc) Fair play vs fair game It's a sad indictment when a business doesn't deliver on its fundamental promises. Nothing leaves a worse taste in the mouth than when any company runs for cover under opportunistic terms and conditions - even when it knows that isn't the right thing to do. Avoid them If you want to avoid painful hosting ailments like host wind make sure you choose carefully. Ask direct questions and get written responses. Beware of fluffy promises which turn out to be bad smelling hot air as I experienced with hostwinds. Poor solution Eventually they offered me a credit in lieu of the payment which they didn't return. But as I explained to hostwinds there's little value in a credit if the products and services are not suitable and if a person doesn't want to use a company because of a bad experience. No response I sent this review to hostwinds (twice) before publishing it. They ignored me.
