Horrible and Un-Caring

1

Me and every other resident of an in-patient treatment facility were told we would no longer be covered by insurance for in-patient treatment because they felt we didn’t need as high level of care. They suggested outpatient treatment as an option to people who were highly suicidal and not stable to be out in the world on their own. Including myself. This happened in January of 2008. They refused to pay for the ENTIRE time of in-patient treatment I had received even though I had been promised before I went in that my stay would be covered. Five days after being in the facility, I was given the news that they were not going to pay for treatment. I filed an appeal with no guerentee during the waiting process and was given the choice to stay and rack up a bill of $700/day while the appeal was in process or I could leave. I decided to stay a few more days. And then I left treatment. Because I am currently un-employed (due to my illness and disabilities) and the stress of the potential financial burden was effecting how much I could fully take take in the benefits of treatment anyway. Today, I am left to my own devices and am extremely lucky to have a handful of people who are trying to help me keep stable. Otherwise there is a high chance that I would be dead by now. But most other people are not fortunate enough to have that kind of support. I am also still unstable, and if I end up dead or extremely sick again, I personally hold Magellan responsible for my death as well as anyone else who may lose their life because of the way they handled things.
