I have been going to this deli for years and the food is great but I was simply grossed out today! They have a very high counter that blocks the view of the employees while they make your sandwich. It is impossible to see over this counter even if you are Michael Jordon. That alone makes me suspicious...why not a clear glass counter so that you can see them make your food? As I was deciding on my sandwich order, there is one small area by the cash register where you can get a glimpse of the employees actually making the food. I watched in horror as I saw three young people in a line making sandwiches with their bare hands. No gloves on. Not one of them stopped to wash their hands at any time!!! They touched all of the food (meat, cheese, lettuce, tomatoes, sprouts and bread) with their bare hands. One girl had long artificial nails and who knows what kind of bacteria was under them. The employees with long hair also did not have it tied back or a hair net on. YUCK!!! I am not a germaphobe by any means. I am however a registered nurse and I know a thing or two about disease transmission, food borne illness and HANDWASHING FOR GOD'S SAKE!!! I would never go into a patients room and start changing a dressing without first washing my hands and donning gloves. It is the same thing!!! This is how diseases are transmitted Beach Hut Deli!!! The most disgusting thing that I saw was one of the employees was touching his face and scratching his head and then he proceeded to take the cream cheese for this one poor soul's sandwich and mold it and press it onto the sandwich with his bare hands like it was Play-Dough!!! ICK!!! I wanted to barf!!! I could not take anymore of this and I called the manager over and asked him why all of his employees were making the sandwiches with their bare hands and no one was washing. He responded to me in the most idiotic and insulting way...he said that the employees never wear gloves because they won't change them and they think their hands are clean!!! So if he can't get the employees to comply with wearing gloves, I know he does not make sure they wash their hands either. He never asked the employees to wash their hands or put on gloves. He just offerred to refund my money. I asked him what if people get sick from his food and he stated "that is why we have insurance". What a tard. Beach Hut Deli does not care about cleanliness or the customers that they serve. People very young and old die from food borne illnesses al the time. I told him I am a nurse and I was very concerned for their health practices there. He was not fazed. I should have told him I work for the department of health. I won't go back there.
