Excessive minimum balances and service fees
1
BancorpSouth Bank of Tupelo, Mississippi has recently acquired First State Bank of Temple, Texas. First State Bank has been in operation in central Texas since 1987. First State Bank is a fair-sized banking institution and it has grown and prospered for 31 years without charging their customers monthly service fees or requiring minimum balances in their checking accounts. BancorpSouth Bank on the other hand, claims on their website, that these minimum balances and service fees are necessary to maintainin their customer's checking accounts. Long-time customers of newly-acquired First State Bank are about to be rudely introduced to this practice due to BancorpSouth's takeover. If BancorpSouth's claims are true, how has First State Bank and others like them, been able to stay in operation many, many years WITHOUT requiring minimum balances and gouging their customers with monthly service fees?
