My family and I viewed a home at 1443 Cecilia Drive Charleston, SC in 2011. It was obvious to my wife and I that the home and yard had been neglected for years. The home itself had a horrible odor of animal waste and was dirty. The two rooms of carpet smelled like urine and were stained. My wife and I explained our concerns about the home and we were assured by Ms. Brabham that the carpet would be replaced and the house cleaned and sanitized before anyone moved in. After talking it over with my wife we decided to pursue this home as we had one child and another on the way and the rent was low enough and the home big enough to accommodate our family provided the home was sanitized and the many repairs we had asked for were completed. My wife was no longer working and I had just started a new job so we were on a very tight budget and this was the only option that was a house in a safe neighborhood that we could afford. Upon our second visit with Ms. Brabham at her office we decided to put a deposit on the home after being told there were several people interested in the home. That was the first of many LIES Ms. Brabham told us. Ms. Brabham told us the repairs had been completed and when we asked to see the progress we were told we could view the home next week. This was our first mistake as we were supposed to move in that week. The following week we were given the keys and upon walking into the home it was apparent that NOTHING had been done to improve the condition of the home. The odor was worse than before. The floors and the carpet were still filthy and the carpet had not been replaced. The yard had not been touched either on top of all the other numerous problems in the home. My wife and I were devastated by this as we had no where else to go. I once again voiced my concerns and Ms. Brabham once again assured us that the property owner had been out of the country and could not be reached by telephone and this was the reason nothing had been done. She swore to us the repairs would completed with in the next 30 days. Over the next 30 days there were too many things that broke for me to count. The front door handle literally fell into pieces when I tried to turn it. I called Ms. Brabham to have this replaced and she told me that it was a result of ware and tear and would be my responsibility to replace it. The yard cost me over 800$ to get cleaned up to a point that it was safe for my children to play in. I paid for this because my repeated requests to have this done were flat out ignored. The company that cleaned up the yard stated that the debris in the yard was over 3 1/2 feet deep and was the result of years of neglect. There were numerous fire hazards in the home which were a result of faulty and incorrect wiring that we paid to have repaired after those requests went un answered. The stairs from the home to the back yard were so badly rotten that my two year old son's leg went through one of the boards and he was injured pretty badly. When we asked to have the stairs repaired once again Ms. Brabham says that is ware and tear and our responsibility to repair them. During the first winter living in this home we attempted to turn the heat on. No surprise the heater did not work. We informed Ms. Brabham that we needed this repaired immediately as we had an infant and a toddler that were sleeping in 40 degree temperatures and this was unacceptable. After being ignored for over a month we called a repair man when we could finally afford to. The unit needed two parts replaced and upon investigation of the duct work there was absolutely NO insulation in the home and the duct work was run incorrectly which was the reason my sons bedrooms were so cold. The heating and air company gave me an estimate which i forward to Ms. Brabham she once again ignored my request. I subsequently paid to have the home insulated because we had to live there and couldn't keep our children living in those conditions. The master bathroom has no windows and was not vented properly resulting in an infestation of mold in the bathroom. This concern was forwarded to Ms. Brabham who then accused my wife and I of beings sloppy people and that we should clean up the mold. During this time My entire family suffered from sinus issues as well as respiratory infections. My family and I stayed in this home because we simply could not afford to move. Over 4 years I spent thousands of dollars of my hard earned money repairing that home. We were never reimbursed for any of this money. In 4 years Ms. Brabham never stepped foot on our property to inspect anything. Our rent was paid on time every month with no exceptions despite being treated like we did not matter and the rent being raised every year. The home owner never attempted to contact us during that 4 year span of time either. We have recently moved out of this home and left it in far better shape than we found it in. For our troubles the property owner and Ms. Brabham are attempting bill my wife and I $25,000.00 for damages to the home that we did not caused and should have been handled by the property manager and or home owner. We are obviously going to fight this to the bitter end. This seems criminal to me. We did not make our repair requests in writing as we didn't think we had to. In short beware of this absolute slum lord! Ms. Brabham is the *** of the earth.
