Don’t trust Subaru dealership mechanics

2

In Nov 2019, my wife drove 22 miles to the Subaru dealership from whom we bought our brand new Subaru (Wake Forest Rd, Raleigh, NC). It was time for our 25K checkup, and since this wasn't a major checkup, she made a noon appointment and waited for the service to begin. It began just short of 1pm. But that WAS NOT the problem. The problem was that she was told we needed new brake pads on the rear and, with a recommended brake flush, that it would cost $370. Now it's a problem! She calls me. I opine that though it's common practice that dealerships charge exorbitant amounts, this seemed too, too much. I suggested she bring it home--even though the service manager said (and this is stated on the invoice) that it was an URGENT matter, since the pads were down to 3mm (5 on the fronts)--and we'd have a mobile mechanic fix it for half that cost. Fast-forward to Feb 19, 2020. The mobile mechanic arrives, removes the back wheels and states, "There's nothing wrong with these brakes--you have 2 more years left on them. They've got over 5mm left on each of them. Did you mean the fronts, because they wear out sooner." Nope, the work order says the FRONTS have 5mm and the rears have 3mm (I even asked the service manager if it wasn't true that fronts usually wear out sooner, he said, "Not necessarily" (though this is a well-known PROBABILITY). Since I had already bought very nice pads and since the mobile man was going to charge me anyway, I had him replace them. So, I called the Service Dept at Southern States Subaru on Wake Forest Rd in Raleigh, NC and asked them, "Were you trying to rip off my wife or are your mechanics incompetent"? He didn't answer; he just said he was sorry. No other explanation was forthcoming; no remedy for my having spent $175 far too soon on these brakes. (by the way, the fronts DO still have 5mm left). Whether they were being dishonest, or they were incompetent is a moot point. We will NEVER use the service at Southern States Subaru again nor will we buy our next Subaru from them--and we suggest that you don't, either. Just for reference, my sister also had a VERY BAD experience with these folks 5 years ago, though that did NOT stop us from buying from them. I still have the pads should anyone want to look at them.
