Dissatisfied with Contractors

Update by user Aug 08, 2013 Sorry, I need to edit this review. The cement job was done by Shah Construction not Khan Construction. Unfortunately I have not yet been able to find an editing tool for my review. Original review posted by user Aug 08, 2013 After Super Storm Sandy destroyed our finished basement , my wife and I looked for recommendations for a good contractors. Many contractors were inundated with all the opportunities for jobs the storm provided, so they were able to "cherry pick" the best jobs and decline ones they didn't like. We had very bad luck with the contractors we chose. Our electric service needed to be replaced and upgraded, we contracted for $1800 with AA Safety Electric Incorporated, who had a good rating with Home Advisor. We advised the owner JR, we would like to upgrade to 200 Amp service and have everything done to code. As our home had no power, no heat or hot water, we were renting an apartment, until our house was livable again. JR arrived in the afternoon and told us he would work into the night on the job and advised that we go relax at our apartment. When we returned we found that He had installed a 150 Amp breaker box , horizontally rather than vertically, with the door panel opening downward. He and his helper, mounted it on a piece of discarded board from a neighbor's garbage pile, and attached it to rotted wood. Most of the BX runs were pulled too tight to allow the rebuilding of walls and ceiling. Then I found that even the 150 Amp breaker box was not to code, the gauge of the wires coming in from the meter were too small to be legal for anything other than 100 Amp service. When we confronted him with the problems with the job, he wanted another $800 to fix it. We contacted home advisor and after sending them pictures of the job and excerpts from the electrical code, they persuaded him to correct it at no additional charge, but we still ended up with 100 Amp service, but the box was replaced and a new box was mounted vertically, and up higher . *** Edison had actually inspected and approved his original installation , which says very little for their abilities as an electric service provider as well. I would strongly recommend against using the services of AA SAFETY ELECTRIC INC. Next we needed a new cement floor poured in our basement. While walking around the neighborhood, we were admiring a new sidewalk and outdoor tile installation. The contractor, John from Khan Construction approached us and asked if we needed some work done. We arranged for him to come over and give us an estimate. He came over and brought a book of photos of his jobs , which all looked nice, and gave us a price of $4800 for pouring 12 yards of 4000 psi Portland cement with fiber mesh , pea gravel, at a depth of 4 inches over wire mesh and vapor barrier. At first the job seemed to go well, they broke up the old cement, removed it and prepared the dirt below for the pour. My wife stayed home when they came to pour the cement and paid him for the job when they left. The next day when we were able to walk on the new cement downstairs and examine the job, we found it had not been floated out level, and in fact had lumps and valleys. We called John and he agreed to fix it. His fix was coming over with a grinder and fringing down some of the lumps, while making a cloud of cement dust in our basement, of course quite a bit came upstairs as well. We should have put a stop payment on the check then and there but he told us he would come back and do whatever was needed to correct the job. When we finally had a tile floor put down recently, the contractor, Pedulla Tile, who I highly recommend ,had to use 20 bags of thin set to level the 410 square feet of floor, which he said really needed a "mud job" to be perfect, but it came out great.
