Discrimination/Racism

1

I visited Recycling the Past, in Barnegat, New Jersey on August 15, 2020 and saw that they still had the wood that I had seen and bought 5 years ago, that would replace some of what I had lost in a fire. The woman that was on duty said that she had to take pics and text them to someone who would tell her how much the wood was. I was holding up the wood for her as she took the pics and I am sure that I was in the pics that the person on the receiving end of the text could see. The sales person said she didn't know how much the wood would be and that she would take my name and number and the owner would call me on Sunday. I said OK. I never received a phone call from anyone the next day. Saturday August 22, 2020, I took a trip to the business to try to catch the owner so that I could try to buy the wood. The woman was not there but there were two guys who were conducting business with other customers who were there. I stood off at a distance as they talked to others clearly waiting for the opportunity to get their attention but they ignored me. I went directly to one guy named Brandon and asked for assistance. The other guy Terry, came over instead of Brandon. Terry was walking behind me as I tried to recall where I had located the wood. As I was walking, Terry said, "that's not for sale". I turned around to see what he was talking about. It was a piece of wood laying on the ground that looked in bad shape because it was laying on the ground in dirt. I said oh no that's not it. A second later I get to the location of the wood that i was talking about and Terry said immediately that it was not for sale. I asked him why and he said that it probably belongs to something else. I knew that I had bought two pieces of the same wood from the same exact pile that I was showing him 5 years earlier and that is why I had come back to see if the others that I had seen then were still there and I was happy to see that they were still there. I thought maybe he was using a sales tactic to try to sell 'the something else', to make more money instead of just the few pieces of wood that I was asking about. I asked him if he could find the something else that it belonged to so that I could buy the whole thing. He said "can't do that". "He said "what if somebody comes along and wants to buy the other pieces, It's not for sale." I said this wood was here 5 years ago when I was here then. He said some of this stuff has been here 20 years. I said so somebody might not come along to buy the other piece for 20 years from now but you still won't sell it to me? I was lightheartedly joking with him as I pointed to the water damage on some of the wood and I said you'd rather let it stay there and rot rather than sell it? He said "it's not for sale." I stopped talking because it made no sense. I walked around him and went to my car to leave because it made no sense. It made no sense that he would sell some other person the other pieces that he said he didn't know what they belonged to or where they were, but not to me when I was a sure sale standing right in front of him. He was feeding me Bull...... and the only thing that came to mind why somebody would turn down money is the hatred of racism. I had taken a ride through the Barnegat neighborhood and had seen more Trump 2020 than I could have ever imagined. As I was sitting in my truck to leave, a friend called. As I answered, the sales person Brandon walked by my truck. I was upset to the point of tears and took the opportunity to ask him "Yall don't sell to black people". Brandon said "excuse me". I repeated what I said. Terry walked up towards Brandon. Brandon told Terry "she said we don't sell to black people". Terry's quick response was "you wonder why". I shut my window as the person on the phone gasped and started asking what was going on and why he said that and why I said what I said. I pulled off with a lump in my throat. I thought about it all day because of his comment and so the next morning I called on a whim to try to see if I could clear up my 'is this racism, question and to see if this guy Terry would change his tune once I told him that I had already bought two pieces of the same wood that he had claimed was not for sale now. While on the recorded phone call, I told him that my dash cam had recorded his comment which amounted to 'You wonder why we don't sell to blacks? That is why." I had not been belligerent nor did I yell or even appear to be mad. I was hurt by the obvious discrimination. During the phone call Terry lied and said that I had asked him "over and over and over and over and over again" about buying the wood. He added that I should "just accept it that we are never ever ever going to sell anything to you and that is our right to do that we have the right to do that." My expectations of clearing up misunderstandings did not happen on this phone call. Terry did not say hey I am not racist we don't discriminate. He did not say I really did have a good reason for not selling the rotting wood to you come back and lets find something that would work that I can sell to you. He said none of that. He insultingly asked me for a receipt for the two pieces of wood that I bought from five years ago and also said that "WE ARE NEVER EVER GOING TO SELL ANYTHING TO YOU." If this is what this place of business represents, then I think that no other black person or person he sees as not good enough to give him their money, should unknowingly walk into a business like this. I would like it to be known so that no one who wouldn't want to give their time or money to a place of business like this won't do so un-knowingly. I would like your assistance in possibly getting a statement from the owner of this company and ask if this what they would like to be known as and is this what they represent. No one that I know will go back there. I recorded the conversation between Terry and myself that took place on Sunday, August 23, 2020. User's recommendation: Do not give your time and money to a discriminating business.
