Demeaning or not?

I have recently joined the legion ranks of ‘senior citizens’ in our country. Although employed and active my husband and I are planning on retiring in the next year or so. I was reading an on-line article about senior discounts and one little-known discount was extended auto warranties. Mine recently expired so I entered my information and was contacted by Steven this afternoon. Steven explained the plan to me and although expensive it seemed worth the money to be able to keep my vehicle serviced by my favorite dealership with one low deductible per visit. I explained to Steven that since we are in the process of purchasing a second-home (for retirement) and that we discuss all major purchases since we are partners, that I would need to speak to my husband before purchasing. I put him on hold and made a quick call… between the two of us we decided that at this time, since we are about to close on our second home, it might not be the best time to enter another pricey endeavor. I explained this to Steven when I returned and at first he was sympathetic, but insistent as salespeople often are. Then he offered to have the finance manager speak with me to see if there was ‘something’ that could be worked out. Then he started the sentence, “I don’t see why if you two are partners and you OBVIOUSLY want this warranty that your husband. . .’ – I stopped him there and told him he was beginning to be offensive and he started again with the same sentence – I interrupted him again and told him he was offending me and he stated he didn’t see how so I explained it didn’t matter that he was and it was best to end the conversation. He continued talking about. . . so I ended the conversation by hanging up. I still don’t know if he realized how belittling he was or if he was truly stupid or just mean. And I HAVE NEVER used the word stupid in reference to a person.
